New Organs for Australia
2001We are very pleased to be able to announce our first two export contracts south of the Equator.
A continuo organ is being constructed for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra to the following specification:
| SPECIFICATION | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Stopped Diapason | 8 | ||
| Principal | 4 | ||
| Chimney Flute | 4 | ||
| Fifteenth | 2 | ||
The "default" pitch of the organ will be A415Hz, tranposable to modern concert pitch by sliding the keyboard along a semitone. The drawstop action divides at middle C, allowing for contrasting bass and treble registrations. Unusually for an instrument of this size, the Principal will be a full-compass stop, the bottom half octave consisting of mitred wooden pipes standing inside the outer casework towers.
The instrument will be exhibited at the St Albans International Organ Festival (10-19 July) before being shipped to the Orchestra's home town of Sydney.
In 2004 it will be joined in the Antipodes by a 21-stop, two-manual mechanical action organ, scheduled for delivery to Sydney Grammar School at around Easter of that year.

The organ will stand on a purpose-made gallery in the historic main school hall (locally known as "Big School"). With space at a premium, it has been decided to place the console at the bass end of the instrument, resulting in an unusually complex layout for the tracker action runs (some of which will pass through openings in the steel rails under the new gallery floor). As well as serving as a teaching instrument, the organ will be used for concerts in combination with instrumental groups of various sizes ranging from one or two brass players to an entire orchestra.
