Noel Mander first started working on his own account as an organ builder in 1936. Mander Organs was incorporated in 1947, then called N P Mander Ltd. He retired in 1983, but has retained in interest in the firm’s work since then. He now spends most of his time in Suffolk surrounded by his books and clocks and continues an active retirement.

Noel Mander built up the firm from modest beginnings to be one of the major organ builders of the country. In 1996 an interesting book of essays was published in his honour and presented to him in celebration of the 60th anniversary of his starting his own company. Entitled Fanfare for an Organ Builder, this publication is obtainable by writing to Mander Organs and includes fascinating historical insight into the development of the company over the years.

Noel Mander was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities and was also made MBE by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to organs and organ building.
