I really appreciate what you did with organ at Princeton University. I can't believe the previous rebuilders would have treated a Skinner Tuba the way they did. Of course once you hear really excellent, thrilling chorus or solo reeds, why would you want your big topper to be a thin, skinny, bleating "Fish-horn".

To let you know that last week I made a CD recording on the organs at Chelmsford Cathedral for Priory Records. The disc includes music by Dr Stanley Vann who was organist at Chelmsford before moving to Peterborough, and the Kenneth Leighton Memorial Album which I compiled a few years ago and is published by Banks Music. The CD will be available in the new year.

'Stumbled' upon your web site whilst browsing for inspiration as to which way to go (rebuild, used/new electronic) with an organ now much in need of a rebuild. It is a 3 manual tracker Peter Conacher (Old Firm) to original spec which I have played for 40 years. Donations to a costly rebuild welcome!

Although I've never heard the St Paul's Cathedral, London, organ first-hand, I enjoy listening to its beauty on several CDs which I own. And now having just last night bought Andrew Lucas' excellent Naxos CD of the instrument, I logged online for more info about this fine instrument. Your firm is to be congratulated for its wonderful work here. The Dome Section, Trompete Militaire and Dome Tubas come across astoundingly on these digital recordings. Congratulations on your artisanship, as well as your restraint at not overly-modifying Father Willis', and Smith's, original efforts. Keep up your fine work.

I am organist at two churches in East Yorkshire and have been a church organist in various locations for nearly 50 years. I visited St Andrew's a few years ago and signed the visitors book. and got a kind of lecture about the organ-building of today.Or tomorrow?
Actually, something may have happened in London, that is,
a step beyond the "classic revival".
I'd express just one slight criticism : We could do with a least some Mander organs on the continent. Just for the sake of it...

Dear Mr Mander,
I have written before on
may 23 2002, and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the First night of the proms , the RAH organ refurbished by your firm and and the brief interlude tour. I never ceased to be amazed by coincidences in life. Not only am I acquainted with Martin Neary, who when time permits, attends the same church as I do, and has been known to be a "temporary" organist there on occassions, but I lived almost opposite Sir Thomas Allen before I moved a couple of years ago. These two great men who open and close this proms season, live about 1/4 mile away from one another.

Watched the proms last evening - what a treat to hear the refurbished Willis organ - fascinating to see inside it and also to see the all too rare glimpses of the organist at work. We could do with more programmes showing the organist at work and the consoles of these wonderful instruments. Len M.

Saw the report on the refurbishment of the organ in the Albert Hall on todays BBC News. What a great job well done.My Grandfathers brother John Mander was an organ pipe builder who went to London in his 20s, I wonder if he was involved in the early days of the firm?

Re Mark's question (where was I sitting at the RAH on Sunday): Well, I was in the front row upper circle block R - about 3 o'clock viewed from the organ. The first chord of the second movement of the Saint Saens really caused people all around me to visibly jump! A girl nearby clapped her hands to her ears in shock - I am not joking. It was GREAT! John Mander sent me a very helpful reply - I gather the organists have yet to get used to the fact that with the roof over the lower level removed, cleaned up pipework and efficient winding system now in place, the great reeds and the swell are so much more effective, and they don't yet realise how much power they are unleashing. I fully agree - it sounds superb - very virile and commanding. I am looking forward to hearing its dominion over the Last Night of the Proms - to say nothing of its accompanimental capabilities at the Christmas Concerts (the Bach Choir one is usually fantastic for hearing the organ in more subtle moments.
A fantastic achievement. Well done all. Bill

Unable to get to RAH but seems to have been a success. Will watch opening night of Proms with interest. Any news on whether Manders have got the tender for the Royal College of Organists Concert Hall in Brum? It must surely be inconceivable for this plum job to go to an overseas builder - that would be seen as a vote of no confidence in UK organ building.
Jeremy Jones
London, UK - July 13, 2004 at 18:33:41
Further to Bill Glenn's comments.I would be interested to know Bill where you were sitting for the Jane Watts Concert. For the re-Inauguration on the 26th June I was sitting in Upper Circle at position 4 o'clock and the balance of chorus was excellent - except perhaps for the pedal 32s which seemed rather subdued. Seating position in Hall could be important, as well of course the registration. Either way the sound now from this organ is superb and exciting, it has re-established itself as one of the best Concert Organs in the world.
Mark Wimpress
Amman, Jordan - July 13, 2004 at 11:55:58
Dear Mr Mander, I have attended every concert which has included the RAH organ since the re-inauguration concert on 26/6. I was at last night's Faure Requiem/Saint Saens in C concert. It was very disappointing that the organ was not used in the Faure (although i can understand the reasons). The question I have is this: jane watts played the Saint Saens and "Sing" (Widor with words" at absolutely full tilt. You could not hear the orchestra or chorus (1000 strong) at all. Was she using all the Bombarde tubas - ror is that blistering sound the great reeds? Either way - it parted the hair! Very exhillarating and worth every penny of the ticket - BUT - it seems to me a bit OTT to use all the heavy guns right from the first chord- after all there is a lot of lesser artillary to work through before you have to resort to Tuba M. I would have thought. Have the great reeds really come out of their shell to that extent? Also the swell seems to project into the hall much better than it did. I know you can't be held to account for organists registrations (don't get me wrong i love Jane Watts), but am really curious as to what she used that made all that hair-parting noise (can't help it - it was BRILLIANT).
Can't wait for the next dose (on telly on friday)!

To John Mander and all his talented staff,
I express a hearty congratulations for the fine work and sound of the Royal Albert Hall pipe organ by your company. All the performers, especially John Scott and David Briggs, displayed the organ brilliantly in their Saturday and Sunday evening concert performances. Dear John,
Thanks for giving me a few minutes of your time when I made an impromptu visit to the workshop on Monday. I am deeply encouraged by the care and craftsmanship that Mander have invested in the RAH organ. Sure, the money was available for a complete rebuild, but the final result at the opening concert on Saturday night (June 26) was thrilling beyond all expectations. The sheer power, clarity and vibrancy of the sound has energised me all week. Would that there was anything comparable in my native Australia (with the execption of the Hill instrument in the Sydney Town Hall). Given the expense of rebuilding these huge organs and the expense of putting on recitals in the RAH, I am glad beyond words that the money and talent were avialable to make the RAH organ available to a younger generation this century. I trust that the RAH project will be a flagship for Mander that will attract more contracts and very many more organ devotees.

In fact none of the Choir keys are cracked or damaged in any way.

John Pike Mander

The inaugural concert for the rebuilt Royal Albert Hall organ last night was most impressive - the charming American lady who sat next to us and chose to spend her one
night in London at the concert also thought so. Bon voyage, Kay. The job sounded marvellous - how do you get the reeds to "settle down" so quickly? A pity that the front-pipes have still to be done (it really is difficult to believe they are tin when they look like dull-grey plain metal) although the rest of the case looked splendid (ignoring Andrew Freeman's rules, of course). I do understnd that the 32'front-pipes require a great deal of work (the steel-work etc) and that they are to be done soon. One tiny, tiny niggle: While it is historically nice to leave some of the past "battle-scars" on the refurbished console, the cracked and chipped ivory on tenor E natural of the Choir manual looks dreadful (and we were far from the only ones who thought so! - was there some particular reason for not refacing the key, particularly as all the sharps are new?

I was present at the inaugural recital of the new Mander Organ at Corpus Christ College Chapel, Cambridge in early 1970. I remember it well to this day - strong and very distinctive sounds especially the reeds. Noel Mander himself was present and introduced the organ from the Builder's viewpoint. If I remember rightly the organ scholar was Edward Higginbottom. Well done to Mander's for keeping up and strengthening your reputation over the years.

Beautiful site - came here to see the write-up of St. Peter's and ended up spending half the morning here! Lovely work. Sorry to read of your travails with spammers and other nogood-do'ers ... as a webmaster for a number of clients who at first insisted upon guest books, I have run into this problem many times. There are only two options, alas. 1- Constant vigilance, which soon becomes tiresome and time-demanding; or 2- closing the guest book. Sad to say, the latter alternative has most often proven to be the only viable one. Best of luck with all your endeavors.

I cannot say enough good things about the impression made upon me upon my visits to St. Paul's, London. The notes accompanying the specification note that the Trompette Militaire was imported from the U.S. If true, who was the Builder? All best wishes for continued success for your firm!

Greetings to all at Mander's
I was delighted to see a more recent update of the current work of the Albert Hall. The console looks maginificent with the modern technology now installed ! I am looking forward to hearing this organ once again in its full glory. It will be thrilling when the full power of its tonal range is explored. The big task for you is the tonal voicing of all those thousand of pipes which I would imagine is going to take many months. Still its will be worth waiting for. Look how long we waited for our organ in symphony hall ! Keep up the good work guys !

Dear organbuilders !
recently I bought a CD - Recording of your organ in St. Ignacius Loyola Ney York. What a sound ! Expecially in the piece "Hommage a Marcel Dupre" I was astonished by the amazing Contrebombarde 32' - Sound. The most powerful Contrebombarde I ever heard.
Best greetings and many success for your projects !

Hallo!
This is Hamburg-Neuenfelde speaking (Schnitger Organ from 1688, see www.schnitgerorgel.de)... I enjoyed a brief but intense visit of a group of organ builders at our instrument. They were on tour with organist Erica Johnson, and were said to be all from the C B Fisk firm. But reading the guestbook entries afterwards I discovered that there was also one of the Mander Company...!

Dear Sirs~
Tonight was my first visit to your web site. What a delight! It is thoughtfully laid-out and easily navigated. I particularly enjoyed the unique feature of the "Discussion" forum.
I feel fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest where we have several fine organ builders. However, I must confess that I find many of the "indigenous" instruments to be a bit too "period specific" at times. For my own tastes, I am very enamored of the Romantic English organ, and I would welcome such an instrument in our city / region. For my own purposes with my firm, I try to build and rebuild eclectic instruments along the lines of the 19th century English and American builders.
I will also look forward to purchasing future recordings of Mander organs. St. Ignatius is stellar! And I hope we may see you out here before too much time passes.
With best wishes, I am remaining
Sincerely Yours~

Just logged on the site for the first time....utilising the updated search capabilities of our local netins (Iowa)...Haven't toured yet but will. We here in Iowa are so proud to have Kent Tritle at St. Ig. in NY....Kent's cousin is a United Methodist pastor/ district superintendent, and a colleague of mine here in the Iowa Annual Conference. Kent has played a number of times here on his trips home. I've known about Mander for a LONG time, the first instrument of your that I personally heard was the NP Mander built for St. Mary Aldermanbury at the Churchill Memorial in Fulton, MO. How exquisite!
Gotta go make the tour.

Dear Sirs. I had an inquiry forwarded to me that was posted by Mr. Malcolm Wechler from this web addres regarding the organ in the Lafayette Theatre in Suffern. I am organist for
the Galaxy Theatre Corp. who operate the Lafayette. The organ is a Wurlitzer originally a 2manual 5 rank now enlarged to 11 ranks. It is played every Friday and Saturday
evening for show opening and intermission. A program series of "Big Screen Classics" is soon to be presented on Saturdays starting at noon and the organ will be played before each feature. Details of this and our other organs, we have a Kimball 3/12 a small Moller and an Estey "Organunique" which are used regularly in our other theatre at Guttenberg NJ and Newton NJ. Additinal in formation can be found at the Galaxy web site at www.Galaxy-Movie-Theatre.com. I hope this information is helpful.

I am collecting as much information as I can on small organs. I am about 65 miles from the Peachtree Rd. UMC in Atlanta and plan to attend the upcoming recital there. So you have any recordings on your smaller organs? I see one listed for St. Matthew's, Westminster (I'm assuming that it's the small organ on your website). Others in which I am interested are: Immanuel Church on the Hill, Toyonaka Church, and Cranmore School. I have downloaded the specifications of these organs always to gather ideas for my future organ. I have a 10 rank old Austin in my basement that I will soon be putting back together. I would love to visit your shop should I journey to Great Britain. I enjoyed the website immensely.

John,
Congratulations on having one of the best websites on organs over the past years. In particular, the rich content, ease of use and attractive page design, now enhanced by newer ideas like discussion boards, which actually get a good amount of use, are very good points.
However, one thing I do not like is the splash screen. It is a huge download, over 50Kb (taking about 20 seconds to download over a conventional modem), has no value to any user (especially return vistors who are probably the core of people using this site) and only introduces an extra, unecessary click. Surely potential customers are more interested in the organs you've built, the work you're currently doing, the quality of your work and your huge knowledge on organs finding outlet in the discussion board?

Hi John
I was directed to your site by Mike Watson (USA) - as both a web designer myself & also because I am "an old boy", having spent some time at NP Manders in the early 1960's ( during Mr Seech's time) I must congradulate you on your site.
As an organ builder (I am from the "MEATES" family) I am afraid that I was not up to much, Mr Noel recognised this & arranged for an office type job elsewhere in London. I now own my own company in accounting - I wonder if your staff still sit on the only sound board I ever made !!.

I found the website when doing some research on St Paul's Cathedral for a quiz question! Very impressed - a professional opinion.
I didn't know that Chichester Cathedral organ was a Mander. I have visited there often (a peaceful spot in a busy shopping day) and been to some concerts.
I used to go to school with a Margaret Mander at the City of London School when it was on the Tudor Street site. I left in 1964 aged 12/13 when we moved house. My name then was Lambert. I believe Margaret is a family member? If so, I would like to be remembered to her.
I live in Portsmouth now, with my second husband John.
Best wishes

I was interested to read the comments with regard to the pipe organ versus electronic debate. I normally get quite bored with electronics and personally for me there is no subsitute for the real thing. Our Church recently completed a six month overhaul and clean on a 100 year old two manual and the work was done for less then the cost of 20.000. compare that to the price of some of the best electronics and what you would have to spend in years on updating the technology. The salesman will tell you that you would spend hundreds of pounds on tuning and regulation but at the end of the day it is worth it if you want the real thing. The thing about digital organs they are okay for the churches and chapels that really can't afford a pipe organ. And when cost is a factor then this needs to be considered. Anyway good luck Darrell in your quest to find a suitable organ. But please keep and open mind and do not be persuaded by all the salesman talk and literature which they bombard you with.

If Darrell A. Beschen's Church is still debating pipes versus electronics, let the church council go and listed to some of the best electronics (Allen, Phoenix, Cantor, Makin, all of which are good and are getting better and better) and then take a deep breath and visit a Mander organ. Electronics are excellent practice instruments, but the superb handwork and musicianship
that goes into Mander organs is surely the only way to give praise honestly - and bequeath something that will go on serving future generations of churchgoers.

Congratulations on your award! Looking forward to the completion of your new organ at Peachtree Road United Methodist in Atlanta. Scott Atchinson is very pleased and it shows everytime I have spoken with him about the new organ. I work for Chance Pipe Organs, the Southeast U.S. representatives for Reuter Pipe Organs. I'm hoping to have a chance in stopping by PRUMC and see some of the installation process. I've also had the privilege of having a few moments at the console of your St. Ignatius, Loyola instrument. Good Luck in years to come and hopefully will have the opportunity to meet some of your staff while they are working on the Atlanta project.

I occasionally have lessons with Ann Elise Smoot at St.Matthew's Westminster - lovely instrument in a great acoustic. Made playing Stanley a real pleasure! What exactly makes a Dom Bedos tremulant a Dom Bedos tremulant though?? Apparently the St.Matthew's instrument has one, though when I have played the organ I have never taken the time to examine it's effect in comparison with the tremulants on other organs I know.

Dear Mander Oragans, I am very impressed with your website, i think it is extremly good. I am very delighted that you got the job to refurbish the Royal Albert Hall Organ. I would also like to say how good the Organ in the chapel at Oundle, Northampthonshire.

I was lucky enough to play the Royal Albert Hall organ twice in the 1980s when a mere teenager (our neighbours were the late Sir Louis Gluckstein, then RAH President). So I have always had a soft spot for the instrument and my abiding memory of those sessions is of my brother, who is profoundly deaf, with a look of utter delight on his face as he could feel the noise of the organ through his feet! Best of luck with your rebuilding programme and to the restoration of a true collosus in the organ firmament.

I just had the marvelous experience of hearing Daniel Roth (!) perform at the intimate venue of St. Peter's Episcopal on your new 57 rank instrument there. As an added bonus, John Mander was amongst those of us in the audience (although he nearly broke a sweat when Daniel began "testing" the strength of the pedal trackers)!
As it says in the portfolio entry for this instrument, you really have made the best of less-than-ideal conditions. The instrument sounds marvelous, and I was especially impressed with the wide variety of tone color and the overall warmth and balance of the choruses. C'est magnifique, gentlemen!
Very sincerely yours,

Wonderful website, very professional, most impressive - One of the things that struck me most was the sumptuos cases in many of your instruments. Although it's quite some time ago, I well remember listening to John Scott in St Pauls Cathedral- the first time I'd heard the organ "live" - amazing instrument, amazing acoustics - quite probably the closest thing to heaven that I've ever heard!

Dear John,
Came upon your site tonight by accident, so to speak, and have spent the last 3 hours looking at it !
I am worried however at the published times you appear to send messages back, far too late!!
I am sure you must take great pride in your excellent web-site.
I was very seriously tempted, but resisted replying to those ignorant of soundboard problems at the RAH.
For my own interest, are the bellows marked a to Z, as there are 26.??? I just wondered.
With all best wishes,

It's good to encounter an organ builder website that reflects the care and attention you obviously lavish on the organs you build or restore. I found it easy and a pleasure to explore your informative and attractive website and to learn more about your company and its projects. I haven't yet had the privilege to hear any of your organs in person, but who knows, that might change some day. What impresses me about most of your organs in the meantime are their beautiful cases (e.g., Bungai Seminario Hall, Chelmsford Cathedral, St. Ignatius Loyola). Best wishes!

You have wonderful people writing in to this remarkable site. I wonder if they know about the International Organ Festival at ST ALbans, Herts UK. It used to be held every other year more or less during the Wimbledon (tennis)Fortnight. My late father went to the first 6 I should think and loved rubbing shoulders with people like Peter Hurford. Is the Festival still going? I am interested in saving a Forster and Andrews organ (1870 odd) but do not know if it is a worthwhile instrument. Advice on both these points, if you can?

I grew up right outside Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia and know of the Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church. Having seen the organ built for this church in this website, I am compelled to visit it and perhaps ask if the OrganMaster might allow me to play it. I am a huge fan of Baroque Music and I have been playing the keyboard for 20 years now. I have just memorized Bach's Toccatta and Fugue in Dm after a year of practice. I have been longing to play this piece on an instrument of the times, and have found one here on your site. Hopefully, with any luck, I might be able to finally do that. Thanks for a wonderful and informative website! Anthony

Peter Wright of Sothwark Cathedral was our tour organist (My choir is St. Thomas - on -The Bourne, Farnham, Director David Swinson). Peter's rendition of Jeanne Demessieux Te Deum was stunning - the reeds at the end could have been designed with this piece in mind! I still play my digital recording of it regularly! I had the pleasure of metting Mr Mander Senior in 1966-7 when I was involved in raising funds for the purchase of an organ for Christ the King Cathedral Freetown Sierra Leone. It was a small chamber organ which I believe before being shipped out to Freetown was used as an exhibit at the Lord mayor's show of that year. I was organist for some time and then returned to England. I wonder in what state that organ is in to-day. Mr Mander came out to install it I think the cost was around ?,000 for six stops plus one which he kindly donated!! Those days were peacefull in Sierra Leone, but many happy memories

Starting to look seriously at sourcing a two manual and pedal instrument for the Prep School I teach at - have been considering a redundant instrument because of costs, but do you have any advice? Primarily to teach young starters, it would be useful if it was good for accompanying assemblies too. We go to the Episcopal Church in Montrose for big services. (3 manual, 42 speaking stops, only 16' on the pedal). The small instruments I have been considering have been 8848, 8884, 16, but i would appreciate any input at all. We do have space, as the school is housed in a Victorian Baronial style Castle, with massess of ceiling height. We do not have great amounts of money, but I am trying to raise some grant funding and there is a certain amount of support in the parent body. What do you think?

Beim Internet durchstöbern, entdeckten wir deine wirklich sehr faszinierende Homepage. Gratulation, es sind ja eine Menge imposante und interessante Orgelwerke die ihr geschaffen habt. Begeisterung macht sich breit, weiter so.

Interesting information on the choir and organ. I look forward to having a blast of the organ when I eventually come down.

I'm an Italian Organ, Harpsicord and wood pipe builder. It's a pleasure to see your instruments (stunning!) and what is growing outside my country about Organ building. In Italy, where we have centuries of tradition, Organ is a memory and nobody has interest to restore or build instruments. We are losing culture and masterpieces.
Compliments for your website!

Dear organ-frieds!
Did you know that in Germany there is an original ARP-SCHNITGER-Organ in danger, his biggest two-manual-instrument built in 1688 for Hamburg-Neuenfelde?
