The pipe organ is an instrument that breathes. In a Mander organ, wind is always regulated with large traditional leathered bellows, supplemented by controlled concussions lending the instrument life without unpleasant unsteadiness. Trunking is made of timber with "letterbox" cross-section, which enhances wind stability as well as keeping the wind noise to an absolute minimum. It also contributes to the overall impression of quality and solidity inside the organ. Indeed, the interior of a Mander organ displays the same finesse and attention to detail as the exterior, all surfaces being finely finished and polished for protection from dust and changes in humidity, even the individual trackers.
Restoration is an area of his art which is invaluable to the organ builder. It affords a unique insight into the long tradition in which he works. Many important organs have been restored by our firm, an area which was pioneered by Noel Mander at a time when unsympathetic additions to, or alterations of, historic instruments was all too common. We have gained particular experience in the restoration of pneumatic organs. This tradition of painstaking restoration lives on and we have assembled particular expertise in the restoration of some important pneumatic instruments. Alongside restoration, we undertake the reconstruction and rebuilding of organs of distinction both at home and abroad; work often entailing the stripping away of unfortunate alterations which mask the integrity of the original instrument, needing replacements of a more sympathetic nature. Mander Organs continuously strives to meet and exceed the highest expectations of its clients. Organ building is an art which requires great patience, meticulous attention to detail and an unfailing determination to excel. We are convinced that our ideals, as well as those of the people for whom we build instruments, can only be realised through adherence to the highest principles with regard to material, design and manufacture-principles which have been the foundation of over 60 years of craftsmanship at Mander Organs. |
