[Computer aided design (CAD)]

A pipe organ is a complex instrument. Its creation requires the combination of many different skills. Cabinet-making, metal pipe construction, mechanics, electronics and above all a musical vision are brought together to form a whole and each element has to be excellent for the final result to be a success. The craft remains essentially traditional. Many aspects of the work are still untouched by the progress of time and defy modernisation. Each pipe is still made individually by hand and no electronic device has yet approached the finesse and artistry of the voicer's ear.

But there are today some areas which can be further enhanced. Even a decade ago, few builders would have considered computer aided design as a means to improve the efficiency of design. However, CAD affords previously undreamed of flexibility in ensuring that every component is designed to optimum effectiveness, be it soundboard, case or sensitive key action. Many layers of drawing can be combined on one document ensuring each sits logically with the next. Our drawing office is equipped with state of the art computer equipment.
